Automotive batteries

CSI, through its Automotive BU, is active in the field of development, testing and homologation of automotive batteries, operating in compliance with the quality standard CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025.

Thanks to the technical expertise gained, teams of technicians and experts collaborate with leading European and non-European manufacturers of vehicles and components, providing experimental support throughout the development process until the final stage of homologation.

Tests are performed in accordance with the main European and extra-European regulatory standards such as:

  • UNECE R100 “Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to specific requirements for the electric power train”
  • UN 38.3 “UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods”
  • KMVSS Part 48. “Safety Test for Traction battery”
  • GB 31467.3 “Lithium-ion traction battery pack and system for electric vehicles―Part 3: Safety requirements and test methods”

Available services:

  • Full homologation according to ECE R100
  • Testing according to UN 38.3
  • Testing for self-certification according to UN 38.3 and KMVSS Part 48
  • Testing according to GB 31467.3

The laboratory also carries out tests on battery systems according to proprietary standards of several European OEMs:

  • Vibrational fatigue tests;
  • Thermal fatigue tests;
  • Charge/discharge cycles.

In addition, the laboratory performs:

  • Full 3D scanning activity of battery components;
  • Integrity and functionality verification on post-crash battery.

Provided with state-of-the-art equipment and instruments required to carry out the tests indicated for UNECE Regulations R100, UN 38.3, KMVSS Part 48 and GB 31467.3.I, the laboratory has in particular:

  • Power supplies used for charging: 85kW; 0 ÷ 600 V d.c. / 0 ÷ 300 A.
  • Climatic cells: -40 ÷ +100 °C
  • Vibrating benches: 16 kN with load support
  • Acceleration slide for shock tests up to 50g

Finally, a new laboratory, that will allow the execution of thermal-vibrational fatigue and charge/discharge tests on automotive batteries up to 600 kW peak (1200 V, 1000 A) weighing up to 700 kg, is in the start-up phase.

The range of services offered for the development of battery systems, together with complementary services in the field of electric and hybrid vehicles, and engineering, allow CSI to offer a complete service: from concept to full vehicle validation.

The CAE service of CSI provides a full support to customers during all the vehicle development phases, from the Concept to the Homogolation/Self-Certification. CSI, known internationally as Euro NCAP laboratory and as a competence hub, with high experienced know-how and skills in the automotive field, offers its experience in the management of turn-key projects with a team of professionals assigned to the project. The BU Conformity Assessment of CSI offers certification, inspection, testing and training services specific for the Automotive Sector. The training courses done by IMQ Group are a reference point in the training and continuing education of professionals and companies technical personeel for years. The cyber security in the automotive field impacts the protection of all the important elements in the vehicle from the treats to the IT safety: a cyber security assessment is required to analyse all the dangers and evaluate risks linked to the exposure to internet of the connected-car.
